On April 9-10, 2017, the Roma Education Fund hosted staff and implementing partners of its Secondary Scholarship and Mentoring Program in Budapest as part of a know-how exchange about the successful and efficient implementation of national academic and financial support programs for Roma secondary school students.
On April 9-10, 2017, the Roma Education Fund hosted staff and implementing partners of its Secondary Scholarship and Mentoring Program in Budapest as part of a know-how exchange about the successful and efficient implementation of national academic and financial support programs for Roma secondary school students.
In this first common meeting, representatives of ministries from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo*, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovakia presented how they monitor and evaluate their respective programs that have grown in scope and coverage to disburse over 4,500 scholarships a year.
Such education-based interventions for Roma secondary school students are noted for their ability to drastically improve attendance and significantly increase students’ grades. REF’s commitment to provide quality, inclusive solutions that contribute to closing the gap in educational outcomes between Roma and non-Roma has pathed the way for the popularity of these programs among national education authorities seeking to address Roma inclusion in their school systems.
This knowledge exchange is made possible through a grant from the Central European Initiative. Over 18 months the participants plan to develop a unified monitoring and evaluation system to measure and monitor the outcomes as well as common guidelines for tutoring/mentoring activities.
