Eight Junior Research Fellows have arrived at the Georg Eckert Institute for for a 12 day workshop on International Textbook Research (GEI) to inquire the “Representation of Roma in European Curricula and Textbooks”. The first day the eight Roma professionals and academics gained an overview of textbook research and data collection.

In this photo, Riem Spielhaus, Head of the Department of Textbook and Society at GEI discuses the importance to have Roma analyzing textbook content about themselves. Through their analysis they can address power relations between mainstream society and the Roma community that are represented in the textbook content and narratives. “Curricula reflects and reproduces ‘societal curriculum’, which reinforces the marginalization or invisibility of particular minority groups”.
