Certainly, one might be surprised by the young Roma woman from Nis, Kristina Asanović, who is only 26 years old and already a doctor. Everyone looks at her when they enter the hospital. She graduated Medicine, and already in July 2020, after finishing school, she started the fight against the world’s biggest plague – the corona virus.

“I was born in Nis (Serbia) and I graduated from high school in Nis, and then I was enrolled at the faculty, majoring in Integrated Academic Studies of Medicine. Towards the end of my studies, I immediately started volunteering at the COVID clinic within the health center, in July and August 2020. That coincided and my obligatory state internship which has lasted for 6 months. When the internship was over, I continued working at the Clinical Center for COVID”, tells us Kristina.

Young, beautiful and full of energy, even though she has been in service of treating her fellow citizens all day long, the young female doctor told us how much the support meant to her, both from her parents and from the Roma Education Fund Scholarship scheme for Roma health and medical students (RHSP).

When it comes to the employment, the young Roma doctor says that for some, coronavirus, no matter how unfortunate it might be, brought jobs and involvement for medical graduates.

“It is debatable when it comes to employment in the south of Serbia. COVID, though a critical crisis, has been an accident which brought about a positive thing: the state has started to pay more attention to health. Some young people managed to get jobs in COVID clinics, whether in health centers or clinical centers”, explains Kristina.

Kristina did not leave her future to luck. She decided to take all the strings into her own hands and make her dreams come true.
